New Zealand's anger over the deportation of its citizens from Australia could intensify soon, with the federal government set to introduce even tighter visa requirements.

It wants the right to cancel a visa of anyone who commits an offence that attracts a two-year jail sentence, even if that sentence isn't imposed.

Henry Sherrell is an immigration researcher and former Labour Party advisor, he says there could be a massive spike in people being deported - as well as a lot of angst for people who have committed crimes in the past.
