The Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters has given a strong indication the Crown will back Te Kawerau Iwi Authority in the ongoing dispute at Ihumātao.
In 2014, 32 hectares of land at Ihumātao was designated a Special Housing Area.
Fletcher Building owns the land but struck a compromise with Te Kawerau iwi tribal authority to return eight hectares.
Hundreds of protests remain on the land in South Auckland to prevent the development.
