Truck safety certifiers frustrated, overworked

From Morning Report, 6:11 am on 23 July 2019

Truck safety certifiers say they are overworked. Many are doing seven-day weeks and some are thinking of quitting.

They are asking the Transport Agency for help, though it is the agency's own clampdown on vehicle inspections that's hiked the pressure on them.

Auckland certifiers are having to cope with 3,500 trucks that had their licences revoked.

Add to that nervous vehicle testing stations are sending more trucks to them to be checked.

Mt Maunganui certifier James Williamson told Phil Pennington he's thinking of retiring much sooner than planned due to the pressures.
