Shooting clubs question new gun regulations

From Morning Report, 6:09 am on 23 July 2019

Shooting associations are saying the regulation of gun clubs is unnecessary.

The government made certain weapons illegal and established a buy back scheme, in the wake of Christchurch Mosque attack.

A second bill announced on Monday will establish a national gun register, and imposes a licensing regime on gun clubs and ranges.

South Canterbury Deerstalkers Association president Tim McCarthy says strict rules already exist in shooting associations.

He told RNZ Christchurch reporter Nicholas Pointon that club officials closely monitor the behaviour of club members on their premises.
