Wellington traffic heavy as trains cancelled

From Morning Report, 8:11 am on 3 July 2019

Traffic heading into Wellington is heavy as the 20,000 commuters who usually take the train find other ways into the capital.

But it's not chaos with many people either staying home or delaying their commute.

A derailment damaged the tracks and points just outside Wellington station on Tuesday night.

As a result there are no train services in and out of Wellington on the Hutt, Kāpiti, Melling and Wairarapa lines.

Work crews have been working through the night to repair the damage but it's not clear when the tracks will be fixed.

RNZ reporter Jonathan Mitchell has been looking at the traffic from an overbridge near Petone.

He's on the line with the latest details.
