As we have been reporting Auckland mayoral candidate John Tamihere is proposing to sell half of the city's water utility Watercare and use the money to clean up Auckland beaches.
Current Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says it's a dumb idea. He says it would take an essential service and monopoly out of public hands, and water rates would go up by $200-$300 a year.
