Tougher penalties for speeding at roadworks urged by workers

From Morning Report, 6:43 am on 2 July 2019

Roading contractors want stiffer penalties for drivers who speed through roadworks.

Eleven people have died working in the construction sector this year.

Six of the deaths involved vehicles, including a Whakatāne incident when three road workers were hit by a truck.

Civil Contractors New Zealand represents contractors working on infrastructure projects.

Its chief executive, Peter Silcock, told RNZ reporter Tom Furley too many workers are being put in danger unnecessarily.
