G20: Australia takes lead on curbing social media violence

From Morning Report, 7:23 am on 1 July 2019

The Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has convinced world leaders to lobby social media companies to do more to curb the publication of violent content by terrorists.

At the end of the G20 meeting in Japan, the leaders issued a statement warning that a repetition of the Christchurch massacre, when a terrorist live-streamed his atrocities on Facebook, threatened the full potential of digitalisation.

Australia's approach has been held up as the gold standard for others to follow.

Their laws make it a criminal offence for companies not to take down videos that show abhorrent violent content.

It is hoped the G20 statement will now give leaders the political support to enact individual initiatives in their own countries.
