Disparity between Maori, non-Maori youth arrests growing

From Morning Report, 6:42 am on 1 July 2019

New figures show a growing disparity between the numbers of rangatahi Māori (under-18's) and non-Māori being arrested.

Although the total number of youth arrests has fallen - Māori under-18-year-olds now make up an even bigger proportion of those taken into police custody.

In 2018 more than 11,000 of young people were arrested, 66 percent were Māori. In 2011 under 40-percent were Māori.

Mani Dunlop spoke to police deputy commissioner Wally Haumaha about how the police can turn the statistics around.
