From Morning Report, 6:39 am on 1 July 2019

Unions are concerned New Zealand's building and infrastructure boom is causing health and safety to be ignored on construction sites.

Eleven people have died while working in the sector so far this year - which more than any full calendar year since 2009.

Among those deaths is one multiple fatalitiy incident - in February, three roadside workers were killed on Matata Straight in Whakatāne when they were crushed by a truck.

The Amalgamated Workers Union represents roadworkers and its National Secretary, Maurice Davis, told Morning Report producer Denise Garland that this year's high fatality rate is unacceptable.
