Guns buyback: Sports shooter 'going to lose the most'

From Morning Report, 6:44 am on 21 June 2019

A sports shooter who has spent thousands on gear says he'll lose tens-of-thousands of dollars in the government's gun buyback scheme.

The six-month buyback, launched after the Christchurch shootings, will pay gun owners a percentage of the market price depending on its condition.

Owners will get 95 percent of market price for a new weapon, 70 percent for one in a used condition, and 25 percent for those in poor condition.

A competitor in multi-gun shooting events, Tony, says the sport has all but been destroyed by the new gun laws.

He told RNZ reporter Tom Furley competitors like him will really feel the effects with thousands of dollars not being compensated.
