Operation Burnham inquiry won't bring justice - Hosking

From Morning Report, 8:28 am on 19 June 2019

The Human Rights Foundation lobby group is seeking financial support for Afghan villagers caught up in the Operation Burnham Inquiry.

The inquiry is investigating allegations six civilians were killed in Afghanistan during a New Zealand-led operation in 2010, and that the military covered it up.

The foundation has set up a Givealittle page to support the villagers' needs, including finding suitable housing because they had to abandon their homes.

The group's chair, Peter Hosking, says the inquiry has become "legalistic and rigid". He says in late April the inquiry decided it was not necessary to hear the villagers' direct accounts of what happened.
