Oranga Tamariki changes don't convince support workers

From Morning Report, 6:37 am on 19 June 2019

Support workers remain unconvinced new Oranga Tamariki laws will deliver immediate improvements for Māori in the system.

A new law will come into effect on July 1, and includes what's known as Section 7AA, which binds Oranga Tamariki to meet its Treaty of Waitangi obligations and work more with Māori.

Lawyer Tania Williams-Blyth has been training community support workers nationwide about the rights of whānau under the new laws.

She told RNZ Māori News correspondent Leigh-Marama McLachlan that it's a step in the right direction but people remain cautious.
