Wanaka midwives welcome news of maternity hub

From Morning Report, 8:20 am on 13 June 2019

A Wanaka midwives support group is welcoming news a Maternal and Child Hub will be set up in the town by early next year.

This week a Wanaka mother gave birth on the floor of a midwife's office after unexpectedly going into labour at 4am.

Southern District Health Board chief executive Chris Fleming told RNZ the situation could have been avoided because the midwife's office was in the same building as a DHB medical centre.

But it turned out the centre was closed and the midwife had no access to it. On Wednesday the DHB issued a statement announcing a site for the new maternity hub has been leased and it is expected to be up an running early next year.

No one from the DHB was willing to be interviewed on Thursday, but we talk to Kimberly Davis from the group Save Our Wanaka Midwives.
