Many marae lack proper fire protection - firefighters

From Morning Report, 6:42 am on 12 June 2019

The Fire Service says more than half the marae they've visited lack even the most basic fire protections.

The service is continuing its investigation into the fire that destroyed Wellington's Tapu Te Ranga Marae early on Sunday morning.

Fire and Emergency's Māori liaison officer Piki Thomas told reporter Meriana Johnsen that marae based at kura and wānanga usually have comprehensive safety systems.

But he says incidents like Tapu Te Ranga raise awareness that many other marae are not equipped with smoke detectors.
