Truckers not convinced by speed camera recommendations

From Morning Report, 6:40 am on 12 June 2019

The trucking industry says it's not convinced a recommendation by government advisors to massively increase speed camera numbers and hike fines will achieve much for safety.

The Speed Reference Group is one of five advising the government as it works on a new safety strategy, due next year.

There are 50 speed cameras in New Zealand but the group says we should follow the example of Sweden, which has 3000 - all signposted and which dish out fines four times higher than New Zealand's.

Road Transport Forum chief executive Nick Leggett told RNZ reporter Ben Strang that Sweden is not an obvious choice of country to compare with.
