One tramper dead, two rescued in Nelson Lakes National Park

From Morning Report, 8:43 am on 4 June 2019

One tramper is dead and two others had to be rescued in the Nelson Lakes National Park at the weekend.

A search and rescue team tried to save a severely hypothermic woman on Sunday morning but the 55-year-old, who had been tramping with a relative, was found dead on Mount Robert Ridge.

Earlier on Saturday evening, two trampers had to be recused after getting into difficulty in deep snow on the same ridge. Both parties headed out into snow-covered alpine routes, with snow falling and the wind chill plummeting down to -16degC.

Sergeant Malcolm York is the Tasman police search and rescue coordinator. He talks to Corin Dann.
