Finance Minister Grant Robertson discusses Budget 2019

From Morning Report, 7:36 am on 31 May 2019

Grant Robertson's Budget has dashed the hopes of a Whāngarei family trying to make ends meet on one minimum wage.

Sarah and Steve have a blended family of five children - the youngest is just nine months old, and for the time-being Steve's the sole breadwinner.

He installs insulation for a living; but he can't rely on 40 hours a week, and though the family budget is topped up by tax credits, they can't afford to heat their modest rental home.

Sarah told RNZ Northland reporter Lois Williams it's good to see more support for mental health and beneficiaries.

But she was hoping the budget might include a living wage and the winter heating payment extended to low-income working families.

Finance Minister Grant Robertson joins Susie Ferguson in the studio to discuss what the Wellbeing Budget will do for New Zealanders.
