Budget 2019: Treasury breach and political drama

From Morning Report, 7:10 am on 30 May 2019

The New Zealand Treasury has admitted its supposedly top secret Budget website was breached by searches for particular keywords.

And it says it's been advised by the police that anyone who found their way into the pages that revealed some Budget details did nothing illegal.

On Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Gabriel Makhlouf told Morning Report the Treasury had not inadvertently placed Budget material online ahead of Grant Robertson's Budget delivery speech this afternoon.

The Treasury has now explained how a clone site, set up to go live once the Budget becomes public, could be accessed by people who were specifically searching for Budget information.

It says only summaries could be discovered and no full Budget documents were accessible.
