Pharmac defies MedSafe with epilepsy drug switch

From Morning Report, 7:26 am on 27 May 2019

About 10,000 people with Epilepsy are being forced to change their medication despite warnings from MedSafe that it could cause them to have seizures.

Pharmac is switching people on anti-epileptic medicines to a generic form of the drug.

But MedSafe says that goes against international guidelines and poses a potentially significant safety issue.

Pharmac is making the move to save $30 million - but Epilepsy New Zealand say it's not worth risking lives.

Guyon Espiner has been investigating Pharmac and filed this report.
