Destiny Church's Brian Tamaki tries politics again

From Morning Report, 7:37 am on 23 May 2019

Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki will launch a political party this afternoon to contest the 2020 election.

A spokesperson for Mr Tamaki says the decision to move into politics is to counter an "escalating tide of poor decision-making" and the erosion of New Zealand values by politicians.

Destiny Church has tried its hand at politics before - in 2005, the Destiny New Zealand party, lead by Richard Lewis, received 0.62 percent of the country's party votes.

Mr Tamaki declined to speak to Morning Report ahead of the announcement. To discuss the implications, conservative political commentator Liam Hehir talks to Corin Dann.

"I'm somewhat conservative... I believe in God. But I think any attempt to relaunch Destiny NZ is destined to fail," commentator Liam Hehir tells Corin Dann.

"In 2003 Brian Tamaki prophesied in five years Destiny would be running the New Zealand government. I don't think God has given any particular gift of clairvoyance there."
