Govt decides on further Iraq, Afghanistan army deployment

From Morning Report, 7:27 am on 16 May 2019

Defence Minister Ron Mark says the March 15 Christchurch shootings will be one factor ministers consider as they look to make a final decision about the future of the Iraq deployment.

Last year, the coalition government extended the mission until the end of next month, while Cabinet considered the long term future of New Zealand's contribution to the US-led operation against Islamic State.

New Zealand has been part of a joint programme with Australia training Iraqi security forces in Taji Camp since 2015.

The latest Defence Force rotation left for Taji at the start of the month and could be New Zealand's last.
