Pakistan Christian leaves death row for Canada asylum

From Morning Report, 6:40 am on 9 May 2019

A Pakistani Christian woman who spent eight years on death row over false blasphemy charges has arrived in Canada, after she was offered asylum.

Asia Bibi had her blasphemy conviction overturned by Pakistan's Supreme Court in October last year, leading to protests and threats of extreme violence from hardline Islamists, who warned that she must not be allowed to leave the country.

Late last year the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government was working with authorities in Pakistan to try and help Ms Bibi. Her arrival in Canada comes after two other high profile asylum seekers were also granted refuge. Our correspondent in Toronto is Laura McQuillan.
