One million plant, animal species face extinction in decades

From Morning Report, 7:15 am on 7 May 2019

One million animal and plant species - that's one in eight - are at risk of extinction according to a new United Nations report. The intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, the UN's leading research body on nature, says nature is declining globally at rates unprecedented in human history. The chief UN scientist on biodiversity, Robert Watson, says halting the degradation of our ecosystems will require a fundamental reorganisation of the way people produce and consume almost everything. He says decades of pillaging and poisoning forests, oceans, soil and air threaten society at least as much as climate change. Our correspondent in Paris Elena Casas was at the launch of the report. She talks to Corin Dann.
