Second Taupō fatal crash in a month 'catastrophic' - police

Police have described yesterday's car crash near Taupo yesterday as "catastrophic". Eight people died when a SUV and a van collided on State Highway One, between Taupo and Tokoroa. The sole survivor of the crash is a nine-year-old boy who was flown to hospital. The accident comes just weeks after a family of five was killed in a crash about ten kilometres away and it's made April the the deadliest month on the roads in 10 years. With two days still to go, 45 people have been killed so far, equalling the number killed in April 2009
