E-scooter wars: Pedestrian group slams transport regulators

From Morning Report, 6:18 am on 23 April 2019

A group battling for pedestrians over e-scooters says newly released documents make clear that transport regulators have failed. Documents released under the Official Information Act cover the public consultation 15 years ago when a road rule was introduced allowing scooters on footpaths without any speed limits. They show this was despite most road control authorities pushing for a speed limit of just 10km/h. They also show the Land Transport Safety Authority opposed a speed limit despite not knowing the risks. It promised more research into the risks, but this has not happened.
