Police defend handling of Paul Tainui while on parole

From Morning Report, 6:43 am on 29 March 2019

The police are defending their handling of Paul Tainui, who has been jailed for life for the rape and murder of Nicole Tuxford, found dead in her Christchurch home in April last year. At the time Tainui, also known as Paul Wilson, was on parole for the 1994 murder of his ex-girlfriend Kimberley Schroder in Hokitika. The night before he murdered Nicole Tuxford, he failed a breath test at a checkpoint and the police found two knives in his car boot. Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney says it's been a traumatic time for the families of the victims and the officers involved. Justice Cameron Mander imposed a minimum non-parole period of 28 years but told Tainui he may never get out.
