Kawerau mayor hopes houses don't become unaffordable

From Morning Report, 6:45 am on 6 March 2019

The mayor of Kawerau hopes steadily increasing house prices in the Bay of Plenty town don't lead to it becoming unaffordable. The Quotable Value house price index indicates national values rose just 0.7 per cent in the February quarter, and 3 per cent for the year. But houses in Kawerau, for the year, jumped up by 28 per cent, closely followed by Wairoa in Hawke's Bay - on 27 per cent - and Ruapehu, where prices went up by 21 per cent. Mayor Malcolm Campbell told reporter Katie Scotcher Kawerau has had its share of ups and downs but it's currently enjoying a growth spurt.
