'X' marks the spot

A gender non-binary person trying to correct the sex on their birth certificate has spent six months battling the Births, Deaths and Marriages office, but is still no closer to success. The Napier curator Jess Mio says the office has admitted it doesn't know how to deal with cases like theirs, leaving Mio frustrated and feeling "like a fraud". They argue that assigning sex at birth as 'male' or 'female' is also assigning gender. Susan Strongman reports.
