Ngāpuhi hapū Ngāti Hine seeks its own Treaty settlement

From Morning Report, 6:45 am on 5 February 2019

Northland iwi Ngāti Hine has told the government it wants to pull out of the wider Ngāpuhi group and reach its own Treaty settlement with the Crown. Ngāti Hine chair Pita Tipene told our political reporter Jo Moir he had met the Treaty Negotiations Minister Andrew Little at Waitangi and told him his iwi wants to go it alone. Andrew Little says he's open minded about the path ahead but it makes no sense for the government to be drawn into separate negotiations and Ngāpuhi iwi need to move forward with one voice.
