NZ military: What are the long-term needs?
A defence expert is putting the hard word on the government to provide details of the long-term needs of the military. Last year, the government announced $2.3 billion for new planes to replace the old Orion fleet, as well as a $100 million vessel for the Navy. This year, a capability review is due in March and will be a blue-print of future upgrades. The Defence Minister, Ron Mark, says a decision is not far-off on what will replace the 1960s Hercules fleet. Professor Robert Ayson from Victoria University told our defence reporter, Jonathan Mitchell, there could be trade-offs or delays.
