Schools illegally refusing to enrol local children
Schools are illegally refusing to enrol children by saying their classrooms are too full or insisting on permanent addresses for families in emergency housing. Organisations charged with getting truants back to school say the problem is increasing, and at least one school is trying to insist that children must live in its zone for at least a year before they can enrol. The Education Ministry says schools must enrol children who live in their enrolment zones without delay. Here's our education correspondent, John Gerritsen.
