Greater Māori role sought in care of at-risk young people

From Morning Report, 7:55 am on 1 October 2018

The Children's Commissioner is calling for thousands of young people to be moved out of state institutional care into Māori or iwi-based care. About two-thirds of the 6,300 children and young people in state care identify as Māori, and the Commissioner says they deserve the right to access care services designed specifically for them. He also argues the funding should follow the children. The proposal would mean a move away from institutional secure residences to community group homes. Children's Commissioner Andrew Becroft discusses the issue with Guyon Espiner.
