Carterton school re-opens after mystery vapour

From Morning Report, 6:16 am on 24 September 2018

A Wairarapa primary school is re-opening after a mysterious vapour cloud sparked a full scale emergency on Friday. The foul-smelling vapour made many pupils of Carterton's South End Primary ill with ten needing to be hospitalised for a short time. About 100 people from the school had to be cleared through decontamination tents. Police say Fire and Emergency, St John, the Defence Force, the Institute of Environmental and Science Research (ESR), and the Ministry of Health have all been involved in dealing with the emergency and trying to pinpoint the cause. RNZ reporter Catherine Hutton spoke to Wairarapa Area Commander Inspector Scott Miller in Carterton yesterday. He says there are still no answers but an early report a plane might have been involved seems unlikely, and it was also unlikely to come from an illegal drug lab.
