From Morning Report, 6:40 am on 9 August 2018

Taranaki locals are expressing shock at the discovery of groundwater and eels contaminated with firefighting foam chemicals. The oil company Shell has admitted using a firefighting foam banned 12 years ago at two tank farms in New Plymouth as recently as March this year. Contamination's also been confirmed of groundwater at its Maui Production station and a firefighting training site near Opunake, and at New Plymouth airport. It is also in two streams stream near Opunake. A food safety warning has gone out, though the regional council says the streams are relatively inaccessible. Emily Bailey who lives nearby told RNZ reporter Phil Pennington that's not the case.
