City Rail Link: Up-front cost beats retrofitting - Goff

From Morning Report, 7:18 am on 24 July 2018

Auckland Council is considering plans to expand the City Rail Link project, which looks to add at least $100 million to the already massive $3.4 billion project. It's looking to expand the Aotea and Karangahape station platforms, as well as widen the rail tunnel. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says doing so will lift capacity from the original estimate of 36,000 passengers per hour to 54,000 per hour at peak times - which is necessary given the rocketing increase in rail patronage in Auckland. He told RNZ political reporter Gia Garrick the original design for the City Rail Link is just inadequate as planners didn't foresee such a big increase in rail use.
