Nationwide protests erupted in the wake of the ruling - with demonstrators converging in front of the courthouse to oppose the decision. Moustafa Bayoumi is a writer and professor of English at City University in New York and described the ruling as a "dagger in the heart of the first amendment principle of religious neutrality".
