Kura frustrated Māori education funds going to mainstream
The chair of a kura kaupapa collective say she's frustrated that most of the new funding to lift Māori achievement will be spent on mainstream teachers. Education received $1.3 billion in the Budget, but just $16 million was focused on Māori achievement, including reo Māori classes for teachers and reducing unconscious bias. Te Rūnanga Nui o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori o Aotearoa is the national body representing Māori immersion schools. Its chair, Cathy Dewes, says nothing was targeted at kura kaupapa where students are going without text books.
