Steel, aluminium tariffs won't help US - economics expert

From Morning Report, 8:50 am on 1 June 2018

Mexico, Canada and the European Union have been slapped with tariffs on aluminum and steel they export to the United States. The final go-ahead was announced just a few hours ago and ends a two-month exemption for those countries. The EU reacted immediately with the European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker saying it would impose counter-measures. Professor of Applied Economics at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University and a former senior economic advisor to President Ronald Reagan, Steve Hanke says the tariffs will not serve their intended purpose. He told us its unclear at this stage why the US has decided to introduce them now.
