Uber drivers may win right to collective bargaining

From Morning Report, 6:16 am on 15 May 2018

An employment lawyer says legislative changes signalled during the election should give Uber drivers the right to collective bargaining. Yesterday, about 100 Uber drivers in Auckland and Wellington staged a protest against low pay and conditions. Employment lawyer Susan Hornsby-Geluk says the Labour party's election manifesto promised changes to legislation governing so called "dependent contractors", workers who aren't entitled to the rights afforded to employees or contractors. She told RNZ reporter Tom Furley this kind of work often involves a strong degree of control by the employer.
