Govt will be held to account on education plans - Welby Ings

From Morning Report, 8:26 am on 7 May 2018

The Education Minister Chris Hipkins has appointed eight specialist advisors to make sure the Government doesn't lose track of what it's being told as it seeks to launch a sweeping overhaul of the education system. Nearly 800 people attended an education summit in Christchurch at the weekend, and another will be held in Auckland this weekend. The participants included students, parents, employers, community leaders and teachers, who were asked to share their thoughts about what their ideal education system would look like in the future. Chris Hipkins says he wants the advisory group to make sure that whatever changes are planned mirror the concerns of people on the ground. Everything is up for discussion - such as the role of Board of Trustees. Welby Ings is a professor in design at AUT and is one of the members of the education advisory group. He tells Susie Ferguson "we want something for our kids better than economic success".
