Peters' N Korea free trade suggestion 'insane' - Paula Bennett

From Morning Report, 7:37 am on 23 April 2018

National seems less than enthused about the possibility of a 53-nation Commonwealth free trade agreement coming together anytime soon. Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters talked up the idea in London at the weekend after he and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

He also suggested the possibility of a free trade deal with North Korea, and hasn't completely abandoned the idea of an agreement with Russia.

National's deputy leader Paula Bennett tells Guyon Espiner Mr Peters' North Korea suggestion is "insane".

"This N Korea talk, even mentioning Russia at the moment..." could be setting New Zealand back in trade negotiations with other countries, she says.

However she says she does think Jacinda Ardern looked beautiful in her korowai at Buckingham Palace, and did a good job overall in the EU and UK.
