NZ gun thefts rise, few police overseeing gun safety

Almost 3300 firearms have been stolen during the past five years - a 35 percent increase on the previous five - and the Police Association believes reforms are necessary to cut that number down. Under current law police cannot check on the security of standard firearms licence holders outside of renewal. Police Association president Chris Cahill told Timothy Brown allowing police to check on the safety of firearms would be a start.
