When should police chase fleeing vehicles? IPCA responds

From Morning Report, 7:52 am on 14 March 2018

When should the police give chase to a fleeing vehicle? When the driver has run a red light or gone over the speed limit, or should the threshold be higher?

These are the kinds of questions the Independent Police Conduct Authority are looking into with a review into the police's pursuit policy. After three people were killed during a chase near Nelson on Sunday, the assistant commissioner for road safety Sandra Venables told Morning Report the responsibility for the tragedy lay with the driver.

The chair of the Independent Police Conduct Authority, Judge Colin Doherty, talks to Guyon Espiner.
