Taiwan quake: Rescuers hurry amid fears of major casualties

From Morning Report, 8:10 am on 7 February 2018

Rescuers are freeing people from trapped buildings in the eastern Taiwanese city of Hualien, following a serious 6.4 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday morning (NZ time). A number of buildings have collapsed or semi-collapsed, including the 300-room Marshal Hotel, which appears to have its lower stories crushed, and has a severe lean over the street. There's reports that two people have died and over 100 injured. There's also been a number of aftershocks including a very strong 5 magnitude shake. It follows a series of 19 earthquakes over the past two days, for the country that sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Taipei-based reporter for the Taiwan Observer, Vincent Lovell, joins us with the latest.
