As usual the focus on Waitangi Day was on Waitangi in the Far North, but events were held throughout New Zealand to mark the country's national day. In Auckland there were three main events at Hayman Park in the south, Hoani Waititi marae in the west, and Ōrākei in the east. You had to get in quick to get some kaimoana with the paua fritters at Ōrākei Domain gone before lunch. But the event, run mostly by local iwi Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei whanau, ran like a dream with thousands lapping up the rays, kai, and Māori culture. RNZ's Laura Tupou was there.
