Surgical mesh limit long overdue - sufferers

From Morning Report, 7:20 am on 12 December 2017

Women who've suffered acute pain from surgical mesh say it should have been banned years ago. Medsafe yesterday announced New Zealand would be the second country to limit the way the mesh is used. Surgical mesh will no longer be used for the repair of pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence, because Medsafe says the risks outweigh the benefits. But it will still be used in other types of surgery like hernia repair. Dr Stewart Jessamine is the Director of Protection, Regulation and Assurance at the Ministry of Health, and joins us to discuss the decision.
