Manus situation 'a humanitarian emergency'

From Morning Report, 7:41 am on 2 November 2017

An Australian senator is urging Jacinda Ardern to increase the number of refugees New Zealand is willing to take from Manus Island. Ms Ardern said last week the previous government's commitment to take 150 refugees from the offshore detention centre remains on the table. She meets her Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull in Sydney on Sunday. The centre in Papua New Guinea officially closed on Tuesday, but more than 600 refugees and asylum seekers are refusing to leave. Green Party Senator Nick McKim tells Guyon Espiner the current situation on the island can only be described as 'a humanitarian emergency'.
