Manus detainess hope PNG court will stop centre closure
Lawyers for refugees and asylum seekers on Manus Island hope that the Supreme Court in Papua New Guinea will hear an injunction today to stop the closure of the centre and the forcible relocation of the men. The centre on the Lombrum naval base closed yesterday, but 600 refugees are refusing to leave. Three facilities in the island's main town are being prepared to house the refugees, who fear further attacks by locals opposed to the relocation. Greg Barns is one of the lawyers assisting with the court action. He tells us the case builds on an early victory in the PNG Supreme Court that ruled the indefinite detention by Australia breaches the PNG constitution. Mr Barns says the latest moves by the Australian government continues that breach.
