Australian govt in chaos after Barnaby Joyce disqualified

From Morning Report, 7:15 am on 30 October 2017

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's Government is facing five weeks of chaos until former deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, who lost his seat due to his New Zealand citizenship, is re-elected.

Mr Joyce was one of five MPs who were deemed ineligible by Australia's High Court on Friday because they held dual citizenship. The Australian opposition is suggesting decisions made by Mr Joyce could now be open to legal challenge.

Mr Joyce has renounced his New Zealand citizenship and will be standing in a by-election in his seat in early December. Attorney-General George Brandis says the Turnbull government accepts the court's decision but described it as a "brutal" interpretation of the constitution.

Mr Joyce says he was always apprehensive about how the court would rule. ABC reporter Matthew Doran joins us with the latest details.
